Europa League Quarters and Semi-Final Draw
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Europa League Quarters and Semi-Final draw was conducted on Friday after a long pause of European Cup football and now it’s time to resume into action with the return of both UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.

The Europa League Quarters and Semi-Final draw was hosted by Pedro Pinto and was performed out by Giorgio Marchetti (UEFA Deputy General Secretary) and special guest and Legend Thomas Helmer(winner of UEL 1996 with Bayern Munich).

Europa League Quarters and Semi-Final Draw: Quarters

Wolfsburg (GER) / Shaktar Donetsk (UKR) vs Eintracht Frankfurt (GER)/ FC Basel (SUI)

In the season 2008-09, Wolfsburg won their maiden Bundesliga title, thus qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history. They came third in their group, behind Manchester United and CSKA Moscow losing the chance for a place in the competition’s successive round. As a result, they qualified for the Round of 32 phase of the UEFA Europa League. They defeated Spanish side Villareal 6–3 on aggregate and the Russian champions Rubin Kazan 3–2. In the quarter-finals, however, they were beaten 3–1 by eventual finalists Fulham. It was their best run in Europa League.

On the other hand, Shakhtar Donetsk have won the UEL in 2008-09 season by beating Frankfurt had their grip on the UEFA Cup ( now known as UEL) back in 1979-80 by defeating Borussia Mönchengladbach. They would certainly try to have a grip over the trophy once again and look forward to proceed further in the knockout stages.

FC Basel who has not been a good campaigner in Europe only managed to reach the semis of 42nd UEL in 2012-13 season where they lost to Chelsea F.C. in an aggregate of 5-2.

Lask (AUT) /Manchester United (ENG) vs İstanbul Başakşehir (TUR) / FC Copenhagen (DEN)

Linzer Athletik-Sport-Klub, commonly known as Linzer ASK or simply LASK is an Austrian Football club. Their longest run in a UEL in surprisingly this year where they reached the Round Of 16 and currently trailing in aggregate of 0-5 to Manchester United and it seems unlikely that they can overturn the aggregate in their favour.

On the contrary Manchester United, one of the most successful clubs in England have grabbed the trophy once a few seasons back in 2016-17 under Jose Mourinho which helped them to complete their trophy cabinet and now would look forward to grabbing it once again and get a direct entry for the UCL spot.

İstanbul Başakşehir Futbol Kulübü
is a Turkish professional football club commonly known as İstanbul Başakşehir. Their European campaign is not praiseworthy as they reached RO16 for the first time this year.

FC Copenhagen
a famous Danish football club that has gained recent success in domestic football but still in a search of a breakthrough to the silverware in the Continental level reached the RO16 for the second time.

UEFA Europa League Quarter Final Fixtures

Internazionale (ITA) / Getafe (ESP) vs Rangers (SCO) /Bayer Leverkusen (GER)

Internazionale or more commonly Inter Milan is one of the most successful clubs in the history of Europa League with 3 titles beside their name. They have conquered this title in 1990-91,1993-94,1997-98. They would lock their horns for the fourth title and which is quite possible with the quality they have in their squad.

Getafe CF on the contrary doesn’t have any past European glory as they managed to reach the RO16 only twice including this years campaign. But this year they can be considered as the black horse with great potential in their squad and look to fetch their first European glory.

Rangers one of the most successful club in Scotland, though their Europa League Campaign doesn’t contain any silverware. They ended up as the runners in the season 2007-08 and it’s their best achievement in Europa League.

Bayer Leverkusen have been the Champions of the season 1987-88 but after that, it had been a draught in their European campaign and would certainly look into winning it this year with such a promising side.

Olympiakos (GRE) / Wolves (ENG) vs Sevilla (ESP) / AS Roma (ITA)

Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. is commonly known as Wolves an English professional football club seems to lack any previous European glory with only reaching the Finals of UEFA Cup back in 1971-72. This year they have a chance to grab the silverware courtesy of players like Adama Traore, Jimenez, Jota, Patricio. They face the likes of Olympiakos who had beaten Arsenal in the last round of fixtures.

And here we go with the most successful club in the history of this Cup competition, 5 times winner Sevilla FC. This Spanish side have bagged the trophy in 2005-06,2006-07,2013-14,2014-15,2015-16.This year might be the 6th time for the Spanish side to lift the silverware and glorify their cabinet.

Last but not the least AS Roma, the Italian side’s Europa Campaign never been much fruitful as they reached the finals only once in the season 90-91 and lost to Inter Milan.

All Quarter Final matches will be played on 10–11 August in Cologne, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen.
