110th Roses Derby: Origin of the Rivalry
The rivalry of Manchester United and Leeds United traces back to 1906 in football but it originated back in mid 15th century from the War Of Roses. The War of Roses were a series of civil wars fought between the two historic county of England, Lancashire and Yorkshire, to capture the Throne Of England.
This derby is also coined as Pennines Derby as the Pennine Hills separates North West England from North East England and Yorkshire. Though the war ended in the 15th century itself the rivalry between the two parts of England still exists. The county of Lancashire represented the Red Rose while Yorkshire represented the White Rose.
During the Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th century, the rivalry once again took a great shape. Both Leeds and Manchester’s economy grew tremendously due to the woollen industry in Leeds and cotton industry in Manchester. During mid 19th century, Leeds uprising economy helped them to build the famous Leeds Town Hall which got listed in Grade I status of buildings in England and soon after in Manchester the Manchester Town Hall was built which also got listed in Grade I and in return making the rivalry more furious.
Football Rivalry and The Greats of the Game
The footballing rivalry can be traced back to 1906 when Manchester United hosted Leeds City at their Bank Street Stadium where United was handed a defeat by 3-0 but won the away leg by 3-1 at the Elland Road. After World War I Leeds United had to be shut down due to financial crisis.
In 1906 a new club Leeds United emerged and gradually came up to the second division and for the first time Manchester United hosted Leeds United at The Theatre Of Dreams, Old Trafford on 20th January 1923. The match finished in a goalless draw but a week later Machester United won the away leg by 1-0. The two rivals met 109 times previous to today’s fixture and Leeds United won 27 times while Manchester United won 47 times and the fixture went undecided 35 times.
The rivalry reached its peak in the 1960s and 1970s under Sir Matt Busby (Manchester United) and Don Revie (Leeds United). One of the fiercest match of FA Cup till date was the 1964-65 FA Cup semi-final with players punching and wrestling against each other and the match ended in a 0-0 draw and Leeds United won the return leg by 1-0. During Riev’s 14 year managerial career he won the Premiership twice and 5 times runners up and Sir Matt Busby won 4 times during his managerial career at Old Trafford.
The all-time highest goalscorer of this famous fixture is Bobby Charlton netting the ball for 9 times with 29 appearances in Roses Derby. The greats to feature in the derby are Johnny Giles, Norman Hunter, Jack Charlton(brother Of Bobby Charlton), Billy Bremer.

110th Roses Derby: Match Review
The match started in a pulsating manner with Manchester United scoring twice within the first 3 minutes of the game and both of them scored by Scott McTominay. McTominay drilled the first one just from outside the box to the downright corner. Scott made a cool-headed finish from the no-look pass from Martial right inside the box. Bruno Fernandes scored the third goal for Manchester United at 20th minute and Lindelof helped the Reds to increase the further by netting the fourth one at 37th minute from a flicked header off Martial
Bielsa’s men managed to score one goal back at the brink of half time on 41st minute courtesy of a header from Liam Cooper. At Half Time Leeds United made two substitutions first one they replaced Klich with Jamie Shackleton and the second one was a shocking move as Bielsa benched Phillips for Strujik but it didn’t affect much as the Red Devils marched their way to the final whistle.
At the start of the second half, Antony Martial missed an easy chance that could have easily made it 5. Daniel James received a yellow card for a dive in the penalty box but it didn’t seem to be an intentional dive as Cooper’s hand came across James’ chest. At the stroke of an hour, Shaw made his way out for Alex Telles. A quick counter at 66th minute from Manchester United led to their fifth goal by Daniel James.
At 70th minute Manchester received a penalty as Leeds defender Strujik tackled Martial down inside the penalty box and the Bruno Fernandes didn’t disappoint the Red Devils as he converted the penalty into a goal and making it half-dozen for the home side. Following the sixth goal, Ole made two like for like substitutions by introducing Van De Beek and Cavani in place of Bruno Fernandes and Rashford respectively.
The next minute Bielsa made his final change by introducing Davis in place of Cooper. In 73rd minute S Dallas sliced the ball into the top right corner and scoring a consolation goal for Leeds United as the match ended 6-2. During the injury time, Scott McTominay went out injured and is suspected to have a groin injury and Scott was also named the Man Of the Match.
