Race for Top 4 spots in EPL: Who will clinch the remaining European spots?

The Premier League title winner had been decided by Gameweek 31. The race for Top 4 spots in EPL is still on for 2 teams and might be open till the last matchday. The Top 4 sides are gearing up heavily and can’t afford to miss Champions League football next season. Here’s our prediction based on their current forms of the teams battling out for the final 2 spots.

The race for the 3rd and 4th position and UCL spot is still up for grabs. Manchester United could have easily reached the 3rd position by yesterday night by defeating Southampton but a late equaliser from Michael Obafemi at 96th minute spoiled the party and which resulted in the Manchester Club being placed at 5th position. Chelsea has faced a heavy defeat to Sheffield United at Bramall Lane by 3-0 this week. Leicester also faced a huge blow from 18th placed Bournemouth with a defeat of 4-1 with Soyuncu being sent off.

Top 4 spots in EPL
The current Premier League Table: Race for Top 4 spots in EPL is on

So we have reached the last 3 matchdays and the 3rd position is open for Chelsea, Leicester and Manchester United. Mathematically, the 4th place is open for 5 teams including Wolves and Sheffield United along with Chelsea, Leicester and United. It seems almost impossible for Sheffield to finish in the top 4 after reviewing the remaining fixtures.

Remaining fixtures of Chelsea:-

  • Liverpool (A)
  • Wolves (H)

Remaining fixtures of Leicester City:-

  • Sheffield United (H)
  • Tottenham Hotspur (A)
  • Manchester United (H)

Remaining fixtures of Manchester United:-

  • Crystal Palace (A)
  • Westham United (H)
  • Leicester City (A)

If Chelsea wins all the remaining fixtures they will end up at 3rd place with 69 points. Dropping points in any of the matches will result in Leicester City take the 3rd spot if they manage to win all the remaining fixtures. Manchester United could also be eyeing for Leicester and Chelsea to slip-up. It will be likely to go down the wire as Leicester City would face Manchester United at the King Power Stadium for the final gameweek of the season.

We have based our predictions on the recent form of the three clubs and the fixtures which they have in front of them.

Top 4 spots in EPL: Fixtures and Predictions

Chelsea‘s next 2 matches:
Liverpool
(L)
Wolves
(D)

Leicester‘s next 3 matches:
Sheffield (D)
Tottenham
(W)
Manchester United

Manchester United‘s next 3 matches :
Crystal Palace (W)
Westham United
(W)
Leicester City

Top 4 spots in EPL: Current Form

Chelsea’s recent performance has been in a topsy-turvy as they have won 4 out of 6 and lost 2 of them to the likes of West Ham and Sheffield. Their defence has always been the matter of concern which lets them down each time. In their last match, they have lost to 7th placed Sheffield United by 3-0 in an away match. Chelsea have already won their Gameweek 36 tie against Norwich thanks to a header by Oliver Giroud. They now sit on the 3rd spot with 63 points ahead of the Red Devils and the Foxes.

Leicester City’s current form has been very poor as they managed to win only one game out of the last five. In other 4 matches, they managed to draw two of them and they lost to comparatively weak teams such as Bournemouth (4-1) and Everton(2-1).
Prolific striker Jamie Vardy has been consistent in scoring goals and has been in the list of contenders of Golden Boot for this season, but their supply line has been very poor with recent injuries to James Maddison.

On the contrary to the other teams, Manchester United have been running a riot with their 18 match unbeaten streak around all competition and won four out of their last five matches in Premier League. Its first time in 8 years that two of their players namely Martial and Rashford scored 20+ goals in a season. So it looks quite evident for United to finish in the top four.

Wolverhampton Wanderers(Wolves) and Sheffield United currently positioned at 6th and 7th respectively are mathematically in the race for top four but reviewing other team’s upcoming fixtures it looks far from the destined land and might end up playing Uefa Europa League. Sheffield might even have to play UEL qualifiers if they finish seventh.

Top 4 spots in EPL: Key Players to make a change

Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic and Willian have been in quite a good form since lockdown which might help Chelsea finish in top 3 ahead of Manchester United and Leicester City. Since the restart, Willian and Pulisic have produced 7 goals and 6 assists between them. If they manage to tighten up in the back, They could scrap out some points from their matches against Liverpool and Wolves in the next two game weeks. Giroud has also found a bit of form which is good news for the Blues.

Will ‘Captain America’ help Chelsea to finish in top 4 ?

Manchester United’s form has been sublime lately after the inclusion of Bruno Fernandes into the United squad. Bruno and Pogba have completely changed the mentality of the whole team. Their combination has been sublime since Pogba has started since lockdown. To make the most of their efforts in the midfield, Martial, Rashford and Greenwood have added excellent finishing touches to score goals with their brilliance.

Heart of midfield for Manchester United

The Foxes had been in brilliant form from the start of the season with Jamie Vardy leading the way from the front. With injuries to key players and a bad patch, They have struggled to get going since the Premier League restart. Despite the poor performance, Jamie Vardy has managed to score 3 times in their last 5 matches which has kept them afloat in the top 4 race.

Leicester’s Trump Card
