Rúben Dias joins Manchester City on a 5-year deal: Nicolas Otamendi to move in the opposite direction

Rúben Dias joins Manchester City. After much speculation, Manchester City has finally confirmed the deal of the Portuguese defender. Manchester City confirmed their 3rd transfer of the window and Pep Guardiola’s motive of bolstering their defensive strength is evident. After yesterday’s 5-2 defeat against Leicester City has clearly shown that Manchester City needs to upgrade its defense to fight for the premiership. This signing seems to be a perfect one after such a show by the defense in the last match. Rúben Dias joins Manchester City and the signing has been announced by the club on their official website as well as social media.

HERE HE IS! 😍

Rúben Dias: Career at a Glance

As Rúben Dias joins Manchester City, let’s have a look at his career till now. Ruben Dias started his career at the local club Estrela de Amadora. In 2008 he moved to the youth academy of Benfica where he played for the junior side till 2015. In the same year, he made his professional debut with Benfica B against Chaves. On 7th March 2016, he was called up in the senior team for the Round of 16 UEFA Champions League match against Zenit as 3 of the 4 center backs were unavailable. In that season Benfica B finished fourth in LigaPro and was the best ranking team for the second division team in their club’s history. He also helped the junior team to reach the UEFA Youth League Final 2015/16.

In the next season, Ruben Dias made his league debut against Boavista. He started the season impressively but had to get sidelined for a month due to his appendicitis operation. He scored his first goal for Benfica in a Taca da Liga clash against Vitoria de Setubal. He scored his first Primeira Liga goal against Rio Ave(5-1) on 3rd February 2018. He was voted Primeira Liga’s best young player of the year.

His trophy cabinet and individual honour consist of UEFA Nations League 18/19, UEFA European U19 Championship, Primeira Liga 18/19, Supertaca Candido De Oliviera 2019, Cosme Damiao and much more.

What can the Portuguese defender offer to the Cityzens of Manchester

Manchester City has been very poor at the back since the midway of the last season after John Stones got injured and club legend Vincent Kompany was never replaced. The same issues remain this season also, as City got thrashed by Leicester City 2-5 in their previous game, and Pep needs to get his defense sorted out.

So Ruben Dias can be the ideal player to fit in Pep’s team and bolster their defensive strength and shape. His defensive quality and presence in the field are top-notch and certainly will give Man City a proper backline shape.
