Arsenal vs Southampton: Match Review
Arsenal gaffer Mikel Arteta made a couple of changes in the starting line up from their last game on Tuesday, Gabriel was one of the new faces introduced today, ironically he ended up scoring at the wrong end the goal that actually knocked Arsenal out. Southampton continued their fantastic home record with a victory courtesy of Gabriel’s own goal on the 24th minute following Kyle Walker-Peters’brilliant square cross into the box. The Saints started the game on a high gear forcing Leno to pull a marvellous save early in the first half, but it was not long until the home team launched another attack, the result being a goal.
Room for New FA Cup Champions 2020/21: Contrasting performances from two sides
I’m very disappointed because we wanted to continue in the competition, we had a dream to do it again like last year and the dream today is over. I am as well disappointed with the way we conceded the goal in an area where we know we shouldn’t be doing that. At the same time, I cannot fault the effort of the players, how they tried and how they went to get a goal in the second half.”
Mikel Arteta in the post-match conference
The Gunners dropped a lacklustre performance, summer signings Willian and Pepe couldn’t inspire the visitors to set up any noteworthy assault on Southampton defence after a dismal attacking display, It doesn’t come as a surprise that Ben Foster was barely tested bar one challenge. Arsenal fans were left fuming and accused Arteta of not taking the game seriously after approaching the game with a negative attitude particularly lining up a weakened team.
Fair play to the Saints though they have been unreal, Ralph Hasenhuttl has turned tables around since the 9-0 embarrassment against Leicester City last season. It will be seen if Southampton will be able to challenge for the FA cup which gives the winner a chance to compete in Europe.
Other FA Cup fixtures continue tonight and tomorrow.
