It’s been almost one and a half-season since the poster boy of Chelsea , Frank Lampard returned to Stamford Bridge and took the job of the manager in 2019 and he has seen ups and downs during his tenure at the club. Frank Lampard’s job got off to a pretty promising start in his first season, his team suffered from inconsistencies during the middle of the season in Premier League and was threatened not to be qualified for UEFA Champions League at one point. However, at the end of the season 2019-20, Chelsea finished at 4th position in Premier League table with 66 points, a huge 33 points gap with the league champions Liverpool but they managed to qualify for top tier European Football.
After a decent performance last season, Chelsea spent a lot of money in last summer transfer window to strengthen their squad and to challenge for the title. However, the things as they are right now, are not quite going according to the plan for Lampard as the London club is currently sitting 8th on the league table after 17 matches and as per the reports, there is a very good chance of Frank Lampard being sacked if their position doesn’t improve at the end of the season.
Chelsea’s recent form in Premier League : Dropped from 3rd position to 6th in last five Gameweeks
Despite a few injury problems, in the beginning, Chelsea was having a very good run in English Premier League as well as in Champions League when they were sitting on 3rd position on the table after 11 matches with 6 wins, 4 draws and just 1 lost. They defeated Bielsa’s newly-promoted Leeds United on their matchday 11 by 3-1 on a home fixture to hold on to their 3rd position on the table. However, after that match, their performance dropped drastically and as a result, Chelsea has just won one match out of six in all competition since then among which five matches were in the Premier League.
After the Leeds fixture, Chelsea drew against Krasnodar in Champions League on their last group stage match, although, none bothered with the result of their last group stage match as Chelsea had already qualified for the knockout stages and Frank Lampard opted to rest a number of his first-team players. But, after that, they lost back to back away matches against Everton and Wolves in Premier League and started to fall down the table.
After two back-to-back defeats, Chelsea managed to win against West Ham by 3-0 at home but the joy of their home victory didn’t last long enough as they lost in the Derby against city rival Arsenal, who are currently on 13th position on the league table. Things got worse for Lampard after the defeat against Arsenal as they dropped at 8th position, which went even further after Chelsea drew against Aston Villa by 1-1 at home.
Although after their last match, Chelsea’s position improved slightly as they got promoted to 6th from 8th position, the questions are already being asked about whether Frank Lampard is the right person for the job or not.
Frank Lampard’s current position : Is he going to be sacked ?
Frank Lampard has been an icon for Chelsea supporters since he joined the club from West Ham at the age of 21. He gave 14 years of his glorious career to the club and has turned out to be one of the greatest legends Chelsea ever had, if not the greatest, before he left the club in 2014. When Lampard returned at Stamford Bridge to take the job of manager, the fans were very excited and naturally expectations were very high from the fans as well as the club officials.
As Chelsea had a transfer ban during Lampard’s first season as manager, he was given a relatively young squad and didn’t have a choice to bring in reinforcements as he pleased. However, Lampard did pretty good in his first season as manager at Chelsea with the players he had at his disposal and the result was satisfying to the fans considering all the factors and obstacles.
As soon as the transfer ban was lifted, Chelsea concentrated on reinforcing their squad and spent a lot during the summer transfer window to sign some big names like Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz. They also added players like Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva (free transfer) and Edouard Mendy and Lampard had a very strong squad with a number of backup options on each position and naturally the expectations were very high.
However, given the current circumstances, the odds are not in favour of Frank Lampard as the club owner Roman Abramovich is not satisfied with the results, especially after spending so much money in the last transfer window.
Frank Lampard recently complained about the tight schedule of the club, and also described the loss against Arsenal as a “lazy performance”.
“We fought… but in the first half we gave ourselves too much to do… i’ll take responsibility on the outside but the players also have to take responsibility”.
Frank Lampard after Chelsea’s loss to Arsenal
After Arsenal defeat, the reports said that Lampard could be sacked if Chelsea doesn’t finish at top 4 at the end of the season. However, after the draw against Aston Villa, Lampard situation has gone worse and he could be sacked even before the end of the season as Roman Abramovich is considering about the tough decision and the speculations among fans are increasing. Despite the draw against Aston Villa, the loss against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge will surely make the life of Frank Lampard very miserable. Options such as Max Allegri, recently sacked PSG manager Thomas Tuchel is now doing the rounds around Stamford Bridge.
As Chelsea stands 9 points behind the league leaders Liverpool, Frank Lampard’s future is going to be decided soon.
