How will Camavinga fit at Real Madrid? Analyzing the 17-year-old as a backup of Casemiro
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

There’s a lot of talk about Eduardo Camavinga joining Real Madrid. It has been discussed pretty much since the last season after Marcos Llorente left for Atletico, leaving Zidane without a backup to Casemiro. Casemiro is one of the most important players for Zidane, he is untouchable when fit. But if you have to win a long league then you need a proper backup for every player. In this situation, it is a very important question that even if Florentino Perez eventually goes for the player, how will Camavinga fit at Real Madrid?

Eduardo Camavinga

So in this season, Real Madrid lacks that back up of Casemiro. So in the upcoming summer transfer window, Real Madrid’s first priority should be signing the back up of Casemiro. There are lots of players available in the market, but the Royal White Jersey demands players with a certain swagger. So there is a player currently playing at Rennes who attracts many top football clubs in Europe including Real Madrid. His name is Eduardo Camavinga. Coach Zinedine Zidane personally likes that boy, who is also his compatriot. So how will Camavinga fit at Real Madrid?

“He definitely has the skills to play for Real Madrid,”

Julien Stephan, Rennes Manager on Camavinga

Eduardo Camavinga has had a sensational first season in Ligue 1. People have never seen a bigger talent than him to come out from Ligue 1 after Mbappe. Let’s have a look at why he’s so special. He’s only 17 years old, so time is on his side definitely. He can be a great asset to Real Madrid, for a long period of time.

Attributes that Camavinga possesses

For us to understand how will Camavinga fit at Real Madrid, knowing his attributes properly is very important. Let’s start with his close control. Camavinga draws in 2.44 fouls per 90 which is the 4th most in the league. As stats don’t do his close control justice, here a little video. Camavinga is also a very tidy dribbler. He completes around 0.6 dribbles per 90 which isn’t a lot but given his position, it’s more than normal. His success rate is 77.8% though. This is a higher rate than Ndombele last season. This is what his dribbles led to. Camavinga is also very tactically aware. This is also what a player like Gilmour has where he always knows where to be wherever the ball is. It’s a special trait that a very few youngsters have at such a young age. This is also why he’s such a great defensive mind.

Defensive Workrate Comparison of young defensive midfielders

Camavinga gets tackles 4.19 players per 90 and wins 2.48 of them which is the 4th most in the league and top 11% in the world. His successful pressures P90 is 7.79 which puts him top 7% in the world. This shows he’s super active and a hard worker. His timing of the tackle is super underrated as well. He usually loses some duels due to him being so raw and not used to the game as much physically, but we can definitely say he’ll only improve with time.

Ball Carrying Ability of Defensive Midfielders

As we were just talking about his pressures, he’s super aggressive in his pressure and well disciplined. He is super quick at closing players down. This just shows he isn’t here to be messing around and wants to play his football. Not a lazy mentality like someone young players. Camavinga is a player who plays with confidence and flair. The kid isn’t scared of a single thing. He tries some stuff which some established players won’t do. Has a fantastic turn on him as well as a great change of speed when pressing. For example, he has a great athletic body on him which is perfectly good for his position. 5’11″ height and weighing at 68kgs for his age is kind of the perfect build for a DM in the modern game. In some ways, he looks similar to Nemanja Matic.

Scopes for improvement

There are of course going to be things he needs to improve on as he’s 17. We think he needs to heavily work on these 3 areas. He is very weak in the air. He has a success rate of less than 50% which is quite poor for a DM that’s 5’11. For a midfielder, he should be more two-footed than he currently is. He seems too dependent on his left. One more thing is his shooting that needs to improve but hopefully, that’ll all come with time.

Why should Camavinga join Real Madrid?

In an article where we discuss how will Camavinga fit at Real Madrid, the first question is whether he should sign for the Los Blancos or not. Camavinga is a player Zidane personally likes, so that’s a plus point. Real already have Casemiro there of course but Camavinga will fit there as a proper backup. Zidane has been known for rotating his squad well, and as there’s no proper backup for Casemiro, so he would definitely give good playing time to the youngster. He can improve his game under the guidance of world-class players in the Real dressing room, especially from Casemiro. If not Real, then he should join some more physical leagues like the Premier League or Serie A.

Conclusion: Will Eduardo Camavinga fit at Real Madrid?

Considering all the statistical data, his attributes, his playing style, his potential, etc. we can definitely say that Camavinga will definitely fit at Real Madrid. Los Blancos should highly consider signing the French youngster as the saying goes “It’s best to shape the material while it’s raw“. So we hope from both Camavinga and Real’s point of view that it’s best if their paths get united in the future.
