29th June 1958 is a historic day for Brazil football as Brazil won its first-ever FIFA World cup on this day. Brazil was Favourite for this world cup. Also football emperor Pele won his first world cup representing the Selecaos.
The Beginning of the Journey
The journey of Brazil in the 1958 world cup was not easy. They were drawn in the group of death actually with reigning Olympic champion the Soviet Union , 1954 world cup’s Bronze medal winner Austria and England. Though England’s side was not so strong as they lost many of their players in the unfortunate Munich air disaster , one of the most horrific incidents of football history.
Group stage
Brazil started their world cup campaign on 8th June 1958 against Austria and beat them by a margin of 3 goals. In the next group match, Brazil faced England but made a 0-0 draw . Brazil and the Soviet Union were at the same points after two matches. In the last game of the Group stage, Brazil faced the soviets and comfortably won against the Olympic champions by a margin of 2 goals. Brazil qualified for the knock out stage unbeaten and as the leader of group 4 along with the Soviet Union who beaten England in a play-off match as both earned the same points in the group stage.
Quarter-Final
Brazil faced a comparatively easy opponent in Quarter Final as they got Wales at Ullevi stadium. The match was played on 19th June. But the match was unexpectedly going very hard for the Selecaos but finally, Pele gave the Brazil fans a relief after he broke the deadlock at the 66th Minute. Players like Garrincha, Didi, Nilton Santos played the game but still , it was the young kid Pele who was on his way to fulfill the statement, Pele won his first world cup.
Battle in Semi-Final
At Semi-Final Brazil faced mighty France who was thrashing their opponents till their journey. French striker Just Fontaine was in dangerous form who scored most goals in the 1958 world cup . His pairing with Attacking midfielder Raymond Kopa was a nightmare for every team at that moment. On 24th June at Rasunda stadium they met each other. But unexpectedly just after 2minutes Vava scored and gave Brazil a lead. But it was french striker Just Fontaine again who equalized for France at 9th minute of the game. But after that, it was only Brazil in all over the match as Didi scored in 39th minute to give the lead to Brazil again. Then it was Pele magic again who scored his first-ever hat-trick and also made the record to become the youngest player to score a world cup hat-trick. Finally, Brazil went through the Final of the 1958 world cup by beating France 5-2.
Pele won his first world cup
Brazil reached the final of the 1958 world cup where they faced host Sweden. The match was played at Rasunda stadium in front of 49,737 fans. Sweden also played brilliantly in the world cup as they knocked out the Soviet Union and West Germany from their way to reach the final of the Tournament. On 29th June just after starting the match, Sweden took the lead after 4 minutes of play. But again it was Vava who equalized for Brazil at 9th minute of the game and also gave them lead after scoring another goal at 36th minut e. But again it was the young boy who scored two goals at 55th and 90minute. He also made another record as he was the first teenager to score in a world cup final . Finally, Brazil defeated Sweden by 5-2 to lift the cup.
Brazil football federation also remembering this day and also memorizing the rising of a born legend in world football.
Pele won his first world cup and made him known to the world. He won two more later. Brazil also won 5 world cups overall to become the most successful nation in world cup history.
